CancerCare® Celebrates 40-Year Partnership with The New York Community Trust

Continuing a partnership that has crossed four decades, The New York Community Trust is granting CancerCare® $300,000 to provide financial assistance to low-income New York City residents and their families who have been impacted by cancer.

“In 1985, we made our first grant to CancerCare because of its team’s unique expertise and experience getting funds to cancer patients with financial need,” said Rachel Pardoe, a program director at The New York Community Trust. “Living with cancer is challenging enough without factoring in the crushing financial burden that too often comes with it. Thanks to several generous New Yorkers who created funds at The Trust specifically to lift some of this burden, we’ve had the privilege of continuing our partnership with CancerCare to this day.”

As New York’s largest community foundation, The Trust brings together donors and nonprofits to support equitable and thriving communities in New York City, Long Island and Westchester. Because it stewards several legacy funds that donors established specifically for cancer treatment and support, The Trust occupies a unique niche in providing long-term support to a citywide cancer safety net. “Since our first grant, advances in cancer research have allowed for better early detection and new treatments,” said Pardoe. “But 40 years later, the core need for assistance getting treatment and support with a cancer diagnosis remains as necessary, if not more so, than ever. Thankfully, grants made from our legacy funds allow us to continue to meet this need today and for future generations.”

CancerCare, the leading national nonprofit providing free, professional support services to anyone affected by cancer, is deeply thankful for the grant. “Our gratitude is boundless for the lasting support from The New York Community Trust,” said CancerCare CEO Christine Verini. “The funding has helped thousands of New York families in the greatest need due to a diagnosis of cancer and will help many more.”

The Orland S. and Frances S. Greene Fund at The New York Community Trust
The Trust’s grants to Cancer Care are made possible, in part, by the Orland S. and Frances S. Greene Fund, which it has used to support CancerCare since 1985. Orland was a successful stockbroker on Wall Street who died from cancer in 1961, after a long illness. In his will, he established a fund at The Trust to support the treatment of cancer patients with financial need. Read more at https://thenytrust.org/news/orland-smith-green
