PARAMUS, N.J. (August 25, 2016) – CancerCare will host its Walk/Run for Hope at Bergen Community College, 400 County Road 62 in Paramus, N.J. on Sunday, September 25, 2016. The Walk/Run for Hope is a series of family-friendly 5K events that raise funds to support CancerCare’s free, professional services provided to anyone affected by cancer.
Walkers and runners of all levels and ages are welcome to participate. Registration and check in begin at 7:45 a.m. The 5K race, which is USATF-sanctioned and certified, begins at 9 a.m. A children’s Fun Run will follow at 10:30 a.m. Both individuals and teams can register in advance at http://community.cancercare.org/walknj.
Donna Meier of Westwood will speak at the opening ceremonies. When her husband was suffering from cancer, she learned important coping techniques for caregivers through CancerCare’s one-on-one counseling. After his death, she joined a support group, based out of CancerCare’s Ridgewood office. “The group has been such a blessing,” said Meier. “We were people who didn’t know each other who were brought together in a horrible situation, but one where we all needed each other and could support each other. We’ll be in each other’s lives forever, and CancerCare brought us together.” This year, in the spirit of giving back, the group will walk together at the event on Team Tomorrow’s Hopefuls.
This community-based event brings together friends and families to walk or run in memory of those they have lost to cancer, honor survivors and support those who are currently facing a cancer diagnosis. Entry fees are a $40 minimum donation per adult (13 and older), $20 minimum donation per child (12 and under) and $10 per child for the fun run only. All participants receive a t-shirt. Race awards will be given to the top finishers and to top individual and team fundraisers. The event will take place rain or shine.
“The Walk/Run for Hope has been a much anticipated event in Bergen County for the past 20 years,” said Kathy Nugent, director of regional programs at CancerCare. “We are grateful to our committee and the many volunteers for their support over the years.” For the past five years, the event has taken place at Bergen Community College. Dr. William Mullaney, Vice-President of Academic Affairs, will preside in the opening ceremonies. Bergen Community College dance students led by Art of Motion faculty will lead the participants in a pre-race warm up. For young children, there will be face painting and arts and crafts supervised by Club Interact from Indian Hills High School.
CancerCare thanks the following event sponsors and community partners: Eisai, the Kantor Foundation, Teva Oncology, Genentech, JFK Communications, The Walking Company, Weichert Realtors, Pronomic Wealth Management, Village Auto Wash, Art of Motion, Road Runner Sports, Starbucks Coffee, New Jersey Family and News 12 NJ.
